With one of easy listening's most memorable opening lines, "The Way We Were" is a cinematic triumph delivered by a true icon of the stage, screen, and studio. Working as the title song to the 1973 romantic drama film The Way We Were – which was directed by Sydney Pollack and also starred Barbra Streisand alongside Robert Redford – "The Way We Were" became the title song for Barbra Streisand's 1974 album. A simple premise about romantic love, she sings; "Scattered pictures / Of the smiles we left behind / Smiles we gave to one another / For the way we were," in verse two, before launching into the epic bridge: "Can it be that / It was all so simple then? / Or has time re-written every line? / If we had the chance to do it all again / Tell me, would we? / Could we?". "The Way We Were" shot to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and won Barbra Streisand an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song.
