Influential Scottish funksters Average White Band first stepped out in 1972 and began notching up up hits from 1974, later becoming one of the most sampled artists in pop history with artists including Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, TLC and A Tribe Called Quest all weaving their tunes into their musical offerings. Written by the band's Hamish Stuart, Robbie Mcintosh – who shortly after the release of "Got the Love" died of a heroin overdose at a party in Los Angeles on September 23, 1974 – and Roger Ball, on funky earworm "Got the Love," they sing, "Got the love / Got to make it work on you / Got the love / Just can't keep it hid," and tap into an enduring disco-funk sound that captures the glitterball-fed spirit of the time. "Got the Love" was featured on the second studio album by Average White Band, which was released in August 1974 and topped Billboard's Pop Albums and Black Albums charts.
