The incredibly popular fictional character Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was created by Robert Lewis May in 1939 for the retail company Montgomery Ward. A decade after its birth, May's brother-in-law, songwriter Johnny Marks, adapted the Rudolph story into a song, which was turned into a massive hit by Gene Autry during the holiday season of 1949. Shortly after its release as a single, Autry's version of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" hit the top of the charts in the US, selling over 1 million copies on its first run. In the years that followed, the song became a holiday standard after being covered numerous times by popular artists like Bing Crosby, Spike Jones and his City Slickers, and The Temptations. In 2020, it was country star Alan Jackson's turn to throw his hat into the ring by putting his own twangy spin on "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," a countrified rendition of the beloved holiday tune that appeared on the deluxe edition of his 1993 seasonal album Honky Tonk Christmas.
