Zach Bryan stripped it back to simple acoustic balladry on "Heading South," and ended up scoring a Gold-certified song. The Oklahoma-born singer-songwriter was inspired to write this 2019 single by a Navy captain (Zach Bryan was an active-duty member of the U.S. Navy himself and recorded this song behind his barracks when he was serving) and after the video of him playing the tune around a campfire went viral, wound up at the centre of a social media storm. He explained that he wrote the song after getting shouted at by an ordnance team leader during active duty and so he wrote the lyric "in a world full of people out to cut his young ass down" in retaliation, with the rest of the song flowing freely after that initial creative spark. "Heading South" made it to number 27 on the Billboard Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart in March 2021, and Zach Bryan made his Grand Ole Opry debut later that year.
