Weezer introduced their third eponymous album aka The Red Album with a deep-fried chunk of humorous power-pop that became an anthem for misfits and outsiders. Lyrically, "Troublemaker" portrays a maverick rock star who resolves to live life (and make music) on his own terms. Many have pointed out the similarities with nerdy iconoclast and Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo, who roars, "I'm a troublemaker, never been a faker / Doing things my own way and never giving up," in the chorus of a song that begins back at school. The catchy tune is laden with slick rhymes for which the indie-rock legend drew inspiration from an unlikely source: Eminem. However, his lyrical dexterity certainly gives the track its bite. "Troublemaker"—released as the second single from 2008's The Red Album—was featured in several TV commercials for CBS's crime drama The Mentalist as well as finishing 22nd on Billboard's US Alternative Songs chart that year.
