Written by American folk singer and songwriter Danny O'Keefe in the late '60s, "Good Time Charlie's Got the Blues" – a tale of a lost soul with a prediction for "pills to ease the pain" – went through a number of iterations before Waylon Jennings got his hands on the track in 1973. The Texas originator and outlaw country grandee, who famously gave up his seat on the plane that crashed and killed Ritchie Valens and Jiles Perry "J.P." Richardson Jr. in 1958, went against the grain to forge a rawer sound at odds with the more polished countrypolitan of the Nashville scene. His outsider story arguably began in 1970 with Waylon and was bolstered by his subsequent two albums: Good Hearted Woman and Ladies Love Outlaws. By the release of 1973's Lonesome, On'ry and Mean, – on which this rendition of "Good Time Charlie's Got the Blues" is featured – he was fully committed to his new role as the bad guy of outlaw countryville.
