Van Halen recorded "Humans Being" for 1996's big-budget disaster blockbuster Twister and kicked up a tornado of their very own with a stormy number that ultimately caused the departure of vocalist Sammy Hagar. Originally titled “The Silent Extreme”, before being re-named "Humans Being", the hard-rocking brothers took a dislike to Sammy Hagar's original lyrics ("Sky turning black/knuckles turning white/headed for the suck zone") and he ended up having to pen new ones. Sammy Hagar quit the band in June that year. However, the song's rocky origin story did little to dampen its commercial success; “Humans Being” tore through the Rock/Mainstream Rock chart where it gave Van Halen their 11th chart-topper in a row, as well as pushing the Twister soundtrack all the way to Number 28 on the Billboard 200. The track also won the 1996 Metal Edge Readers' Choice Award for Best Song from a Movie Soundtrack.
