It might seem surprising to some, but UB40's mega-hit "Red, Red Wine" was actually written by American crooner Neil Diamond, who included it in his second studio album Just for You in 1967. Originally a somber folk-tinged ballad, "Red Red, Wine" reached Number 62 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was later turned into a reggae song by Jamaican-born singer Tony Tribe in 1969, peaking at Number 46 on the UK Singles Chart and becoming Trojan Records' first charting hit. Heavily influenced by Tony Tribe's version, English reggae and pop group UB40 recorded it for their 1983 covers album Labour of Love. It became an unexpected international hit, hitting the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and reaching Number 1 in the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Poland. In fact, UB40's version became so hugely popular that the band performed it live at Nelson Mandela's 70th Birthday Concert in 1988. It was also cited by Neil Diamond as one of his favorite covers of his songs.
