Sounding like a cross between prog maestros Yes and anthemic pop-rockers Toto, Ontario band Triumph burst onto the scene in 1975 and released two albums in their native Canada – a self-titled debut that was later remastered and renamed in 1995 as In the Beginning, and Rock & Roll Machine (also Rock 'N' Roll Machine) – before reaching a wider audience with their third studio album Just a Game in 1979. The penultimate track on Just a Game, "Hold On" starts off on a mellow acoustic folk note before surging forward with rockier, euphoric intensity. The rousing track snowballed into one of band's biggest AOR radio hits, along with "Lay it on the Line," and peaked at number 38 on the Billboard Hot 100 and at number 33 in Canada. You could also say Just a Game set the stage for what came next, as Triumph went on to take the '80s by storm with hit-making albums like 1980's Progressions of Power and 1982's Never Surrender.
