The highest-grossing film of 1986 wouldn't have been the same without its hit-packed soundtrack, to which it arguably owes much of its blockbuster success. From Kenny Loggins’ song “Danger Zone” (which went to number two) to Berlin’s power ballad staple “Take My Breath Away” (which went to number one), the Top Gun soundtrack and film is a goldmine for sing-a-long crowd-pleasers. Originally written by Vancouver musicians Mae Moore and John Dexter and recorded by Canadian rockers Loverboy, "Heaven in Your Eyes" is another gem from the original Top Gun soundtrack that epitomises the '80s and its predilection for all things power ballad. Over a thick synth intro, Loverbody singer Mike Reno pulls out all the stops to deliver an emotional rock whopper that brings to mind high school dances and hairspray. "Heaven in Your Eyes" gave Loverboy their penultimate top 40 hit – just behind "Notorious" in 1987 – rising to number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 in late 1986.
