Forming the title track of Tool's four-track Opiate EP, the band's Maynard James Keenan has dedicated this monstrous eight-minute alt-rock dirge to psychologist and psychedelics guru Timothy Leary and former Tool bassist Paul D'Amour. The four-track EP, which was certified platinum by the RIAA and later charted on several international charts when Tool's catalogue went online in August 2019, also comprised opener "Sweat," (featured on the Escape from L.A. soundtrack) the funky screamo of "Hush," twitchy sledgehammer "Part of Me," as well as two live tracks "Cold and Ugly" and "Jerk-Off." Drawing inspiration from a Karl Marx quote ("religion is the opiate of the masses") Tool's 1992 EP Opiate was released two years after the band's formation and marked their territory as forward-thinking rockers capable of moulding metal, post-punk and grindcore into new shapes.
