Tom Jones pulled out all the stops for a masterclass in crooning that doubled up as a rejoinder to his rival Engelbert Humperdinck. As legend has it, the pair first began sparring after they were both signed to the same manager, Gordon Mills, with whom Engelbert Humperdinck eventually parted ways, allegedly leaving a bad taste in the mouth of Tom Jones. “Release Me” (or "Please Release Me" as this version is titled) was written in 1949 by country hopeful Eddie Miller along with Robert Yount and Dub Williams and underwent a number of makeovers over the years. Tom Jones tried his hand at a gospel remake of the track, but that was binned and replaced by this ballad-friendly version of "Please Release Me," which stays faithful to the sonic blueprint's country roots and which was aired live before making itself known on a number of Tom Jones's compilations over the years, including 2008's Green Green Grass Of Home.
