Holiday carols tend to be joyous, cheery, or wistful. However, 1966’s “You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch” -- written for the animated cartoon special Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas -- is a different type of Christmas song entirely. Its wickedly dark, playful tone almost feels more like a Halloween tune, but it’s become one of the most beloved Christmas songs in recent memory. The lyrics were written by Dr. Seuss himself, with music composed by Albert Hague. The most iconic version of the song remains the original, performed by singer Thurl Ravenscroft. Its lyrics describe the titular Grinch as a profoundly unlikeable, unpleasant individual to be around, employing creative and often very elaborate insults to translate this message. Though Thurl Ravenscroft is now acknowledged as the performer, the song went uncredited for a long time, leading to speculation that it was sung by actor Boris Karloff, who was the narrator on the animated special. At the 10th Annual Grammy Awards, the soundtrack was awarded the Grammy for Best Album for Children. “You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch” reached Number 14 on the US Billboard Holiday Songs chart, as well as Number 32 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
