"The Song Is Over" is a track by English rock band The Who, included in their fifth studio album, Who's Next (1971). Written by lead guitarist Pete Townshend and produced by Glyn Johns and The Who, "The Song Is Over" was initially meant to be the final song on their unfinished sci-fi rock opera, Lifehouse. Featuring lead vocals by Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend, the track opens with a few piano chords by Nicky Hopkins and gradually builds up into a baroque rock extravaganza that displays the full extent of the band's powerful instrumental skills. Lyrically, "The Song Is Over" links the concept of song with the ebbs and flows of life and romantic relationships in general. It also quotes the then-unreleased Who song "Pure and Easy," as well as the Townshend original "Party Piece for Rael," written for another incomplete rock opera titled Rael. The song's original version can be found on Pete Townshend's 1999 solo album Lifehouse Chronicles.
