"Sugartime" is a vocal pop song written by songwriters Charlie Phillips and Odis Echols in 1957. Even though, throughout its history, the song was recorded by several artists, the most popular recorded version of the song dates back to December of 1957 when the Ohio trio The McGuire Sisters tried their hand at it. A bright-eyed pop tune with naive, romantic lyrics, "Sugartime" featured the trio's signature vocal harmonies backed up by pre-rock and roll pop instrumentation. By February 1958, their rendition held the coveted top spot on the Billboard 200 while also reaching number 7 on the Cashbox chart. This success wasn't new to them; "Sugartime" became their second Billboard number 1 single after the 1954 hit "Sincerely." The song's lyrics give a nod to "Honeycomb" by Jimmie Rodgers, another hit from the same year. The McGuire Sisters weren't the only ones to embrace "Sugartime;" Johnny Cash's version from his Sun Records days revisited the Cashbox country chart in 1961 and its infectious chorus even found its way to Bollywood, featuring in the title song of the film Dil Deke Dekho in 1959. The track was also featured in the 1995 HBO film of the same name, which explored the affair between lead singer Phyllis McGuire and Mafia boss Sam Giancana.
