Southern rock outfit The Marshall Tucker Band released their sixth studio album Carolina Dreams in 1977 as a tribute to their home state of South Carolina. Just like their previous five albums, Carolina Dreams was produced by Paul Hornsby and featured guitarist Toy Caldwell as the band's chief songwriter. The album proved one of the most commercially successful releases of the band's career, debuting at Number 23 on the Billboard 200 and reaching Number 22 on the US country charts. Even though it is best known for the hit single "Heard It in a Love Song," Carolina Dreams also contained the deep cut "Desert Skies," a bluesy country number about a carefree man roaming through the desert and enjoying the vastness of the landscape. Clocking in at 6' 23", the track features copious amounts of lap-steel guitar and saxophone, as well as a fiddle solo. Despite not having been released as a single, "Desert Skies" became a staple of The Marshall Tucker Band's live repertoire and was included in the live LPs Hall of Fame Concert (2017) and New Year's in New Orleans! Roll Up '78 and Light Up '79! (2019).
