After serving in the military, the five formed a group, released albums, and toured the US. They met singer and pre-med student Gerald Alston while on tour and asked him to join the group. He declined the offer but later became the group's lead singer after Smith became ill. Smith died of a brain tumor in 1970 at the age of 30.
