Even though they began performing in the late 1950s, American all-male vocal group The Lettermen first achieved popular acclaim after signing with Capitol Records in 1961. The trio, consisting of Jim Pike, Bob Engemann, and Tony Butala, landed their first minor hit later that year with a cover of "The Way You Look Tonight," originally popularized by Fred Astaire in the 1936 film Swing Time. Throughout the rest of the decade, The Lettermen delivered a series of Top 10 hits on the Adult Contemporary charts, most notably "Come Back Silly Girl" (1962), "Theme from a Summer Place" (1965), "I Only Have Eyes for You" (1966), and the medley "Goin' Out of My Head / Can't Take My Eyes Off You" (1967). The latter interpolated Little Anthony and the Imperials' 1964 single with Frankie Valli's first major hit as a solo artist. Shortly after its commercial release, The Lettermen's version reached Number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and Number 2 on the AC chart, becoming one of the most successful singles of their career.
