This savvy blast of '80s meta-rock from The Kinks leafs through a flurry of references to the iconic group's back catalogue, stopping at the riff from 1964 hit "All Day and All of the Night" and featuring lyrics inspired by 1970 classic "Lola" ("Met a girl called Lola, and I took her back to my place / Feelin' guilty, feelin' scared, hidden cameras everywhere / Stop! Hold on, stay in control"). Slipping out of their '60s pop attire and into something a little more heavy-duty and riff-powered, "Destroyer" is more in thrall to rock and new wave than the floppy-haired melodies the band built their career on. The track was originally intended to be the lead single from the group's 19th album, Give the People What They Want, but ended up being released after the album in September. In 1982, "Destroyer" soared to number three on the Billboard Rock Top Tracks chart and number 85 on the Billboard Hot 100.
