"The Unicorn" is a song from The Irish Rovers. It was written by the prolific poet, songwriter, cartoonist, author, and sometimes singer Shel Silverstein. His books have sold more than 20 million copies and his songs have earned him two Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and an Academy Award nomination. His songs have been covered by many artists. He is known for his humor and dark wit, something many of these songs contain. He wrote "A Boy Named Sue" which was Johnny Cash's biggest hit. Loretta sang about motherhood in his "One's on the Way,"  and Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show had hits with two of his songs, "Cover of the Rolling Stone,” and "Sylvia's Mother." Silverstein recorded "The Unicorn" for his Inside Folk Songs album in 1962. It also appears in poem form in his book Where the Sidewalk Ends. The tells the story of the unicorn, a fabled single-horned horse-like animal. It's based on the biblical story of Noah's Ark and explains why unicorns aren't around anymore. The Irish Rovers recorded the song in 1968. The song is loved by children and adults alike and has sold more than 8 million copies worldwide. The backing track for "The Unicorn" is available with background vocals or as an instrumental on Karaoke Version.
