The Doors opted for understated 1960s stoner psych-rock in this sultry tale of poker-hot love in the heat of an unexpected autumn warm spell. Hypnotic, slow, alluring, dreamlike, and passionate ("I love you / The best / Better than all / The rest") "Indian Summer" is cast from gentle guitar plucks and era-defining Hammond organ and was reportedly the first track ever recorded by The Doors in 1965. However, it was kept off the band's self-titled 1967 debut, replaced by "The End" as the LP's final track, and remained in demo form until 1970 when a re-recorded version was included on The Doors' fifth album Morrison Hotel. Written by Robby Krieger, Jim Morrison, Raymond Manzarek, and John Paul Densmore, "Indian Summer" was later included on 2007's 40th-anniversary reissue of The Doors as a bonus track. "Indian Summer" is arguably still among their back catalogue's most overlooked treasures.
