When The Cure stepped out with their sixth studio album The Head on the Door in 1985, they had already snagged their first top ten UK hit with playful perennial "The Love Cats" and despite bringing in flute, violin and Spanish and Middle Eastern undertones, they had begun to add darker shades to their increasingly gothed-up sound as heard on their previous album, 1984's The Top. For The Head on the Door, they mined a sturdier, slick, even danceable pop aesthetic that proved a recipe for success on this career-defining album. Following directly after whimsical indie anthem "Close To Me" – which coincidentally helped to birth the album's title – the saxophone-encrusted "A Night Like This" radiates noirish charm while also evoking a desperate sense of melancholy in the lyrics ("But I watch you like I'm made of stone / As you walk away"). The Head on the Door, which went to number seven in the UK, was the first to feature drummer Boris Williams.
