A gnarly funk-meets-disco strut, "Too Hot ta Trot" ashamedly celebrates sexuality, sensuality – and horns – sending out a peak '70s dispatch that embodied a group at the top of their game. The Commodores – emboldened by the success of their previous two Billboard R&B chart-toppers, Easy and Just To Be Close To You" – built their 1977 tune around the well-known saying "hot to trot"; a phrase with origins in '50s jive talk but that later got adopted by the disco era. The track was included on The Commodores' 1977 live album Commodores Live!, and spent a week at number one on the R&B singles chart, also peaking at number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1978. To add another layer of '70s mythology to the track, "Too Hot ta Trot" was written for the 1978 disco comedy film Thank God It's Friday, which starred Donna Summer and which saw The Commodores step in to perform the song. Fun fact: Lionel Richie also plays saxophone on the song.
