The Clash displayed an ardent love of reggae throughout their career, best encapsulated by 1979's "Guns of Brixton" and prior to that, "Police and Thieves;" a sign of things to come from the UK punk iconoclasts who shifted their focus to reggae for this cut from their debut self-titled studio album of 1977. The twelfth track on the band's landmark album was originally written by Jamaican artist Junior Murvin—who recorded it in 1976—and produced by the late, legendary Lee "Scratch" Perry with players including Boris Gardiner (bass), Ernest Ranglin (guitar), Sly Dunbar (drums), Keith Sterling (keyboards), and Joe Cooper (organ). The Clash pulled it off. After Lee Perry heard the album while in London in 1977, he allegedly played it to Bob Marley, who later paid tribute to The Clash on his track "Punky Reggae Party." The Clash—released in the US in 1979—holds up as one of the greatest punk albums in history.
