On Let Me Be the One,” The Carpenters' 1970 song and the third track from their seminal 1971 album Carpenters, the late frontwoman Karen Carpenter sings with warmth in her voice. Granted, it’s only a relative morsel of a song, clocking in at 2:25, but it captures the sibling duo in their element; an easy-listening soother accentuated by romantic piano and bright flashes of '70s orchestral pop. "Let Me Be the One" was originally written by Roger Nichols and Paul Williams and first recorded by Canada-based singer and songwriter Nanette Workman who had released it in 1970 as a single. The Carpenters didn't reach any great heights of notoriety with the understated song but did enjoy some success on the airwaves. Regardless, Carpenters became one of the duo's best-selling albums, its singles earning the pair four Grammy Award nominations including Album of the Year, and the LP itself scooping the Best Contemporary Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus.
