The Beatles recruited Indian musicians from the Asian Music Circle in Finchley, north London for "Within You Without You," with Anna Joshi and Amrit Gajjar on dilruba, Buddhadev Kansara on tamboura, and tabla player Amiya Dasgupta. Written by George Harrison, it was the only non Lennon–McCartney song on the band's eighth studio album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967). The track represented a significant pivot towards the Indian devotional tradition, also rooted in spiritual lyrics from George Harrison, who had become to immerse himself in Hindu philosophy and the teachings of the Vedas. George Harrison, who wrote the song following weeks of meditation in India with his mentor, Ravi Shankar, in 1966, later said that the tune for "Within You Without You" was conceived through his interest in regularly performing musical exercises known as sargam, which use the same scales as those behind Indian ragas.
