Forming in 1979, The Amazing Stroopwafels got their start on the streets of Rotterdam, beginning life as a duo of buskers before expanding their lineup. Wim Kerkhof (vocals, double bass and piano), Arie van der Graaf (electric guitar), and Rien de Bruin (acoustic guitar and accordion) became known for switching up their lyrics to include both Dutch and English, logging a catalogue of albums while continuing to perform tirelessly around the Netherlands. "Oude Maasweg," a treasure plucked from the archives of Dutch pop music, is widely regarded as the group's signature hit and a perfect example of their bilingual approach. Leon Russell's "Manhattan Island Serenade" (from the album Carney) served as the inspiration for this folksy gem that kicks off in English before segueing into Dutch. Bringing the industrial port pulse of Rotterdam into view, the single sailed into the Dutch Top 40 to become one of two charting hits for The Amazing Stroopwafels.
