American actor and musician Jack Black has firmly established his comedic persona in the pop culture landscape with roles in films such as School of Rock and High Fidelity, which positioned him as a bona fide rock music enthusiast. But it’s his project Tenacious D – the musical comedy duo composed of Jack Black and Kyle Gass – where he gets to spread his wings musically. “Kielbasa,” the opening track off Tenacious D’s 2001 self-titled album, quickly introduces the pair’s musical style: acoustic guitar-based rock and roll with humorous, often absurd lyrics that lean heavily on innuendo. There are also brief references to religious figures such as the Hindu deity Krishna and the L. Ron Hubbard book Dianetics. “Kielbasa” opens with a spoken-word skit where the duo attempts to write a new song on the spot. It was co-written by Jack Black and Kyle Gass. Like the rest of the album, the track was produced by the duo The Dust Brothers (EZ Mike and King Gizmo).
