"Portuguese Love" is a song by R&B artist Teena Marie from her third studio album, It Must Be Magic. The album also contains one of her biggest hits, "Square Biz." The talented singer, songwriter, instrumentalist, and producer was a three-time Grammy nominee. Known for her soulful soprano voice and debuting with an album without her photo, she shocked fans when she appeared on Soul Train as the first white artist on the popular R&B program. Many listeners had previously assumed she was black.
In "Portuguese Love," she sings of a passionate romance in Portugal. The lush track is filled with Latin rhythms and jazz influences. Rick James, her collaborator in and out of the studio, can be heard whispering a few sultry responses toward the end of the song.

Oh my GOODNESS!! The track is PERFECT in every way! I LOVE it!! First of all, no one screwed up the arrangement - whew!! It sounds like a LIVE band; the 48 bar break is Exactly right; the percussion is wondeful, the background singers are singing On Key, the ad libs at the end are great - i can add to and sing what I want without one of the background singers singing my notes. This track is awesome! Now, let's go back and re-work the Once You Get Started track. I'll be your loyal customer!!
