After scoring her first gold record with her 1981 LP It Must Be Magic, American R&B singer Teena Marie returned in 1983 with her fifth studio effort, Robbery. An entirely self-produced affair, the album was her first release for Epic following her departure from Motown Records the previous year. It was promoted through the singles "Fix It," "Midnight Magnet," and "Dear Lover," all of which enjoyed moderate chart success in the US R&B charts. But the album is best known for its last track, the gut-wrenching soul ballad "Casanova Brown," a string-laden meditation on her ill-fated relationship with musician and then-mentor Rick James. In it, Teena Marie expresses her contempt for James' promiscuous lifestyle and several infidelities while showcasing her impressive vocal dexterity. Despite not having been released as a proper single, "Casanova Brown" quickly became one of Teena Marie's signature songs. Robbery, its parent album, peaked at Number 13 on the R&B charts and Number 113 on the Billboard 200.
