New wave luminaries Tears for Fears aka Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith veered off down a slightly different sonic path for their first album in 17 years, a political and personal excavation, The Tipping Point, which was released in 2022 via Concord Records and introduced by its 2021 lead single and title track, "The Tipping Point." A gentle yet poignant meditation on grief, the song – which was made in collaboration with long-term co-producer and touring member Charlton Pettus – marked the UK duo's first new original release in four years, with its heavy-hearted subject matter and poetic lyrics ("Silver tongue, they'll soon be gone / When the sunlight hits the room / Lay down with them if you want / Watch their breath and feel the cold") beautifully conveying Roland Orzabal's painful experience of grief following the death of his wife Caroline in 2017; that 'tipping point' between life and death.
