"Rudy" is one of the standout tracks on Supertramp's profile-boosting third studio album Crime of the Century, released in September 1974 on A&M Records. Across five and a half minutes of stomping art-rock, the prog-pop heroes sketch out the vivid portrait of Rudy: an outsider "on a train to nowhere". "He needs time / He needs time for livin' / He needs time / For someone just to see him," they sing. According to the band, "Rudy"—which features a recording taken at London Paddington station with crowd noises captured from Leicester Square—was partly inspired by member Rick Davies. Supertramp were known for bringing astute social commentary into their music, often reflecting on the UK education system in 1970s Britain. Crime of the Century was a commercial high-water mark for the band, cracking the Top 5 in the UK, Canada and Germany and also reaching the Top 20 in Australia and France.
