On "A.D. 1928" – the futuristic opener of their 1981 album Paradise Theatre – Chicago art-rock stadium heroes Styx lured in their listeners with a slow-moving synth ballad intended to clear the air before the carnage of hair-raising prog epic "Rockin' the Paradise" sets in. Awash with glowing synths, this slip of a piano is ditty from the band's Dennis DeYoung is sculpted from the same melody as "The Best of Times" – the fifth track on Paradise Theatre – which gave the band their second Canadian chart-topper in that country, as well as hitting number three on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number 42 in the UK – and was released as a single with "Rockin' the Paradise," going to number eight on the Billboard Rock Chart. "A.D. 1928," which also features vocals from Dennis DeYoung, works to set up the album's themes and concept, loosely serves up a fictional account of Chicago's Paradise Theatre in order to comment on the decline of the Great American experience.
