At the beginning of their career, Stone Temple Pilots were largely dismissed by critics as a rip-off of other bigger contemporary acts such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam. But whereas the former drew inspiration from punk and the latter from folk-rock, Stone Temple Pilots melded the predominant grunge aesthetic of the early 1990s with a marked 1970s hard rock feel, also incorporating elements from sludge and heavy metal. Core, their studio debut, managed to top the Heatseekers chart and climbed to Number 3 on the Billboard 200, quickly establishing the San Diego natives as one of the lead exponents of the grunge movement. Besides the singles "Sex Type Thing," "Plush," and "Creep," all of which enjoyed great commercial success in the United States and went on to become alternative rock radio staples, the album also included the fan favorite "Dead and Bloated." Written by singer Scott Weiland and the DeLeo brothers, the album opener quickly sets the tone for the rest of the album, with the frontman's raspy baritone vocals front and center, backed by a martial guitar riff and a powerful rhythm section. Despite not having been released as a single, the song reached Number 49 on Billboard's Rock Digital Songs chart.
