After reaching the top of the country charts in the US with his 1986 solo debut Guitar Town, country artist Steve Earle headed back into Nashville's Emerald Studios to work on his next album. Entirely recorded using digital technology, Exit 0 (1987) was Steve Earle's last country album before entering his hard rock phase. Despite not being as commercially successful as its predecessor (it only reached Number 15 on Billboard's Top Country Albums), Exit 0 featured some of his finest work, including the single "Nowhere Road," which won Best Country Songs at the 1988 Grammys, and the plaintive Americana-tinged track "The Rain Came Down." Written by Steve Earle with Michael Woody, the song is a eulogy for country life, describing the struggles of a rural family throughout different generations.
