"Only a Fool Would Say That" is a song by Steely Dan from their debut album, Can't Buy a Thrill. Formed by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen in the early 70s, Steely Dan blended jazz, rock, Latin, and soul influences with cryptic lyrical vignettes. Part outcasts/part cool kids, Becker and Fagen introduced listeners to worlds filled with antiheroes and colorful characters. They use "Only a Fool Would Say That" to poke fun at the young idealist with their "utopia on earth" message. "I heard it was you / Talkin' 'bout a world / Where all is free / It just couldn't be /And only a fool would say that." The second verse explores that message through the eyes of a hardworking laborer. Can't Buy a Thrill contains the hits "Reelin' in the Years," "Do it Again," and "Dirty Work."
The backing track for "Only a Fool Would Say That" is available with background vocals or as an instrumental on Karaoke Version.
