1990s Australian alt-rock stalwarts Spiderbait were formed in 1991 by bass guitarist and singer Janet English, drummer and singer Kram, and guitarist Damian Whitty but didn't hit their stride until 2004 when they shot to number one on the ARIA Singles Chart with their stonking, stadium-sized cover of "Black Betty." The band's interpretation of the 1930s African-American work song—first brought into the American public consciousness by the venerated blues and folk legend Lead Belly—evokes the 1977 reimagining of the track by Ram Jam in all its explosive axe-wielding rock glory. Spiderbait's hit cover of "Black Betty" was ultimately the making of the band, who clung to the number one spot in Australia for three weeks and scored a placement on the 2004 adventure comedy Without a Paddle and the classic racing video game Need for Speed: Underground 2. The song also helped to catapult their sixth studio album Tonight Alright (2004) to the number 14 spot on the ARIA Albums Chart.
