Taking its name from the 1911 Rudyard Kiping poem of the same name, "Female of the Species" is a track by English rock band Space. Released on May 27, 1996, as part of their debut album Spiders, the song was written and sung by lead singer Tommy Scott as a tribute to his late father, who was always very critical of his son's musical taste. Featuring a Latin-tinged lounge music aesthetic, "Female of the Species" was partly inspired by The Walker Brothers' theme song for the 1967 film, Deadlier Than the Male. The track found its way into popular culture, being featured in TV shows like Cold Feet, movies like The Matchmaker and Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, and even in a commercial for Impulse body spray in the UK. Chart-wise, it debuted at number 15 on the UK Singles Chart and reached its highest position at number 14. In 2019, it received a Silver certification from the BPI for over 200,000 units sold. The song also had some success in the US and Canada, hitting the charts there, and even made it onto the Australian ARIA Singles Chart.
