Few songs have caused as much controversy as Slayer’s “Angel of Death,” the opening track to the band’s third studio album Reigning Blood (1986). Intended as a critique of the writings by Nazi physician Josef Mengele, “Angel of Death” caused an uproar due to the graphic nature of its lyrics, drawing complaints from parents as well as advocacy groups. In fact, the lyrics to the song delayed the release of the entire album. Musically, “Angel of Death” is a fast, aggressive thrash metal track that went on to become one of the most influential songs in the genre. It was written by guitarist Jeffrey Hanneman and produced by Rick Rubin. When the LP was finally released, the song was widely praised as one of the album’s highlights, with particular praise going to the performance by Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo. In 1988, rap duo Public Enemy sampled the “Angel of Death” riff for their own song “She Watch Channel Zero?!”
