Seattle hip-hop trailblazer Sir Mix-a-Lot, real name Anthony L. Ray, knew from an early age that he wanted to be a rapstar. After teaming up with Nasty Nes and local businessman Ed Locke, he founded the Nastymix record label in 1983, and scored a breakthrough hit with "Square Dance Rap" in 1986. With pitched-up vocals giving the track a cartoonish edge, bouncy novelty bop "Square Dance Rap" bore the hallmarks of old-school electro and sampled three songs, "Rock Me Baby" by B.B. King (1964) "Get Out of My Mix" by Dolby's Cube (1983) and "Change the Beat (Female Version)" by Beside (1982). The track was featured on his debut 1988 album Swass – which was certified platinum in 1990 – and Sir Mix-a-Lot went on to hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 with his 1992 hit song "Baby Got Back," where it spent five weeks at the top pop charts, selling over two million copies and went on to win a Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance.
