Leonard Cohen’s seminal song “Hallelujah” has gone through various iterations. From Leonard Cohen’s original version on Various Positions, through John Cale’s cover, through the haunting version by Jeff Buckley, and many others. One place you might be surprised to find the mournful hymn is an animated film about singing animals, but that’s exactly where you could find it in 2016. The animated film Sing by Illumination Entertainment featured “Hallelujah” quite prominently, performed by singer and actress Tori Kelly. In her role as the shy elephant Meena, Tori Kelly brings technical prowess to the song while retaining the character’s vulnerability. The version that appears on the film features Tori Kelly accompanied by a string section and a piano, with an arrangement that’s closer to Jeff Buckley’s desolate version than Leonard’s Cohen soulful anthem. It was also included on the film's original soundtrack, which reached Number 8 on the Billboard 200 upon its release.
