"Once in a Lifetime" is a song originally recorded by Anthony Newley in 1961. Penned by the English actor and singer-songwriter and his songwriting partner Leslie Bricusse, the song is a heavily orchestrated, theatrical affair with a strong whiff of music from stage musicals and films from that time. This influence can be also heard in the track's lyrics, whose hopeful lyrics about wanting to pursue one's life calling mirror the "I Wish" song archetype. Upon its original release, "Once in a Lifetime" peaked at number 36 in the UK and number 85 in the United States. The track was later covered by Rat Pack member Sammy Davis Jr., who included it in his 1962 album What Kind of Fool Am I: And Other Show-Stoppers. Though faithful to the original version, Sammy Davis Jr.'s rendition imbued the song with his own brand of cool, adding big-band jazz instrumentation and slightly increasing the tempo.
