Ryan Bingham's "Southside of Heaven" appears on his 2007 southern rock debut for Lost Highway Records, Mescalito, which features the production prowess of Marc Ford (Black Crowes guitarist) as well as Texan country royalty Terry Allen. The melancholic, harmonica-infused Americana amble explores the idea of an itinerant, ill-fated man on the search for peace in a new place. "But on the south side of heaven / Won't you take me home? / Cause I've been broke down for so long / And Lord, it's getting cold," he sings wistfully, his throaty voice belying his 36 years. "Southside of Heaven" picks up the pace towards the end of the song, finishing on a foot-stomping bluegrass note driven by first-class country instrumentation. Two years after the release of Mescalito, Ryan Bingham earned a Grammy Award for his song "The Weary Kind," featured in the Scott Cooper-directed country movie Crazy Heart.
