"Xanadu" is a song by Rush based on a poem written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge in 1797. Drummer Neil Peart wrote lyrics inspired by Coleridge's unfinished poem Kubla Khan. Coleridge had composed the poem after waking from an opium-fueled dream. He was interrupted by a visitor while writing the poem and was never able to remember the lines that had come to him in the dream. That unfinished poem was enough inspiration for Rush to create an 11-minute musical masterpiece. The composition starts with a five-minute intro and then transitions into the lyrics which describe searching for immortality in a paradise called "Xanadu." The song's arrangement is very intricate with each member playing several instruments. Surprisingly, it is a rare one-take recording. What you hear on the record is the first time they played it in the studio.
The backing track for "Xanadu" is available as an instrumental on Karaoke Version.
