"Natural Science" is a song by Rush from their seventh studio album Permanent Waves. After several years of non-stop recording and touring, the band took a much-needed six-week break before embarking on the recording process for the new album. Once the trio began working together, the songs came together quickly, but drummer/lyricist Neil Peart had an idea for a longer song. He just couldn't put it into words, literally. He endured a three-day writer's block but eventually came up with lyrics to "Natural Science." The song explores themes of technology and nature. The nine-minute progressive rock masterpiece is composed of three movements, I) Tide Pools, II) Hyperspace, and III) Permanent Waves. Nature played a part in the recording process. The splashing sounds that begin the song are oars in a lake, recorded by producer Terry Brown and his assistant. Natural echo recorded off the mountains was used with Alex Lifeson's guitar tracks.
The backing track for "Natural Science" is available as an instrumental on Karaoke Version.
