The show tune "Hey There" was originally written by composer Richard Adler and lyricist Jerry Ross for the 1954 musical The Pajama Game, based on the novel 7½ Cents by Richard Bissell. The song was further popularized by American singer and actress Rosemary Clooney, whose version topped the Billboard Hot 100 that year. Rosemary Clooney's rendition was later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. The song was first performed by actor and singer John Raitt, who played the role of Sid in The Pajama Game. In the play, Sid pours his heart out into a dictaphone after being rejected by his love interest for a second time. By playing the message back, the character sings a duet with himself. Though Rosemary Clooney's version remains the most popular one by far, other artists have tried their hand at the classic show tune, including Sammy Davis, Jr. and Johnny Ray. It has also been featured in sitcoms such as Only Fools and Horses and Cheers.
