Written by Harry Warren and Al Dubin in 1937, September in the Rain was a regular on tastemaking radio show Your Hit Parade between 1935 and 1940 and quickly soared to standard status following its placement in the 1937 musical film Melody for Two. Guy Lombardo, James Melton and Rhythm Wreckers (vocal by Pauline Byrns), all made it into the charts with their versions of the song in 1937 while Dinah Washington scored one of the defining renditions in 1961. Rod Stewart brought this meditation on nostalgia back to life nearly five years later for the fifth volume of his series of American pop standards, Fly Me to the Moon... The Great American Songbook Volume V, adding a dash of elevator muzak via the twinkly vibraphone adornment from Alex Navarro. Released in 2010, the album also featured takes on "Fly Me to the Moon," "I've Got You Under My Skin," "What a Difference a Day Makes," and many more.
