This open-hearted tearjerker from Riley Green will turn even the stoniest of cynics into a blubbering mess. The title alone is enough to make you weep. "I Wish Grandpas Never Died" was written as a tribute to the Jacksonville singer-songwriter's late grandfathers, who died in 2010 and 2018, respectively and is one of three singles on his 2019, Dann Huff-produced debut album Different 'Round Here – along with "There Was This Girl" and "In Love by Now" – which helped him win The Academy of Country Music's New Male Artist of the Year award that year. "I Wish Grandpas Never Died" was also cleverly primed for country radio, with its radio-friendly lyric, "I wish Country music still got played on Country radio", and duly lit up the radio waves. A radio edit later replaced the sly dig at country-pop with the line, "I wish George Jones still got played on country radio".
