With a unique style that's equally indebted to outlaw country and gritty blues rock, Texas-based singer-songwriter Ray Wylie Hubbard first emerged into the American roots music scene with the outlaw anthem "Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mother," which was later turned into a hit in 1973 by Jerry Jeff Walker. Thanks to the song's popularity, he managed to score a deal with Warner Bros. Records in the mid-1970s, but his music remained largely unknown until the 1990s when the success of the albums Lost Train of Thought (1992) and Loco Gringo's Lament (1994) prompted the rediscovery of his earlier catalog. Included in his 2006 LP of the same name, the woozy electric blues "Snake Farm" perfectly showcases Ray Wylie Hubbard's penchant for intricate character studies, telling the story of a man who, despite having an intense aversion for snakes, falls in love with a woman working at a snake shelter. Despite not having been released as a single, "Snake Farm" remains one of Ray Wylie Hubbard's best-known songs.
