A collaborative effort between composer Heinz Roemheld and lyricist Mitchell Parish, "Ruby" was specially written for the soundtrack of the 1952 feature film Ruby Gentry. A year later, the song was further popularized by numerous orchestral recordings that enjoyed great success on the US charts, including those of Richard Hayman, Les Baxter, Harry James, Victor Young, Vaughn Monroe, and Les Brown. "Ruby" eventually became a jazz and pop standard, reaching the ears of soul singer-songwriter Ray Charles, who had just scored the first Number 1 single of his career with a rendition of Stuart Gorrell and Hoagy Carmichael's "Georgia on My Mind." Decidedly more poignant than its previous versions, Ray Charles' take on "Ruby" found the singer and pianist crooning over lavish string arrangements and a subdued jazz rhythm section. Shortly after its release, the song reached Number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100 and Number 10 on the US R&B charts. It was included in Ray Charles' 1961 album, Dedicated to You.
